Hansel For Boys- A Case Study In Boys Fashion
One of my favorite recent shoots was for the boy's lifestyle brand Hansel for Boys. The founder of the company reached out to me with some general ideas of what she wanted to create for the brand. They wanted a mixture of fun art pieces that appeal to boys, flat lay photos of the branded t-shirts, and on figure fashion of each of the shirts. The photos were to be used for the e-commerce website that the brand was launching. The concept of the brand is that often boys clothing is hyper-masculinized and that there is a place in the market for fun boys clothes without the hyper-masculinity. Let's get onto the shoot!
We started the day with what I would call the easy part. That is the flat lays. I have been doing flat lays for six years now and they are pretty much second nature especially with products that are made as well as these shirts are. On this shoot, I was able to bring my product stylist Meg Davis along as well. Meg does a fantastic job with kids shirts.
The second part of the day was to create branded images. I leaned into my stylist Meg to help us come up with some awesome content. We were given a great theme to run with. We came up with some really cool concepts for this part of the day. The lighting and the photos are super fun. They make me want to be a kid again. They also make me want to play around with light and cool products all day. I really love when clients allow us to be creative and do really fun concepts.
The third part of the shoot was the most fun. We were able to get some awesome on-figure images of the shirts. Instead of the standard static e-commerce shots, we wanted something with more movement. Something that was more carefree and represented boys. Have a look!
We worked with the Hansel team for a full day on set. In that day we were able to photograph a dozen shirts as lay flats, over a dozen concepts, and to knock out each shirt on figure as well. For a 10 hour production day we got a ton done. The client was able to walk away from the shoot with a library of content for both the website and social media.
